Keeping lofts cool (Sunday Times)
July 13, 2026

One of our loft projects features in The Sunday Times, as part of a piece on loft extensions and avoiding overheating. Cross-ventilation shaped key decisions: a widened rear landing gives a clear sightline from front to back, letting the loft cross-ventilate and the whole house stack-ventilate. Triple-glazed rear windows reduce heat loss to the north; deep-reveal sash windows at the front cast their own shade. We left out skylights for the loft, based on cost and on heat. The result: a new bedroom suite that stays cooler than the floors below it.
The project also included a full rebuild of the rear outrigger and side return: the existing structure was in such poor condition that rebuilding proved cost-neutral, letting us widen it and bring it up to a much higher standard of thermal performance.
