Cockpit Studios in Deptford has reached "practical completion". After an intense eight months on site, Quinn have handed back a refurbished ground floor, a new rear studio building, and a transformed street frontage to Cockpit and their community of makers.

The project delivered three things: new dedicated studio space in the rear yard, a fully refurbished ground floor with new services, acoustic ceilings, and internal finishes throughout, and a new aluminium façade that reframes the building's presence on the street. Commissioning of the MVHR, heat pump, and building services was completed and witnessed by Max Fordham. Cockpit's makers began moving into the rear studios in early September.

Working in a live building throughout construction — with Cockpit's tenants continuing to occupy the site — shaped how every stage of the project was managed. That the building came together without displacing the community it was built for matters as much to us as the architecture.

The project is not entirely finished. Landscape works to the front and rear yards, and the installation of Amber Kokhar's tile mural to the front boundary wall, will continue over the coming months under separate contracts. These final elements will complete the building's relationship with the street and with the wider neighbourhood — we will be posting further updates as they progress.
