Artists studios at scale: a collaboration with Bold Tendencies. This proposal aims to challenge the status quo, with a custom-built tall building in which artistic and community functions sit above a light industrial plinth.

London’s artists are in dire need of light industrial spaces for them to work and make in. For too long the default solution has been unplanned and organic: artists move into ‘meanwhile use’ buildings in cheaper areas, and have to find new studios when a site is redeveloped or rents go up.

Our speculative proposal is to repurpose sites alongside railway lines across the UK into spaces which will always be available for artistic practice. We believe this stability will allow artists to focus on their creativity and help improve their already significant contribution to the country’s economy.

This collaborative project has the backing of Southwark Council, the Greater London Authority and Arts Council England. We’re currently looking for a site on which to place a prototype and take forward our vision, and welcome conversations with any interested parties.

We have worked with Bold Tendencies over a number of years, helping bring to life their vision for an experimental civic and live arts space atop a disused multi-storey car park in Peckham. View projects
