Bold Tendencies had been running a world-class classical music programme from the top floors of a disused Peckham multi-storey since 2011, but the raw concrete shell was working against the performances. We were commissioned to create a dedicated concert venue within the car park: a concertinaed acoustic lining that would let audiences properly hear the music being made there.

Working with resident orchestra Multi-Storey and acousticians Sound Space Vision, we developed a plywood screen spanning the full 33 metres of the car park. Shallow valleys at the centre gradually unfold into larger, deeper bays at the outer edges: the geometry is tuned to improve the playing experience and reflect sound out towards the audience. Birch plywood in its natural state brings warmth to the in-situ concrete surroundings. Angled plywood units meet at an anodised aluminium profile, fixed back to a CNC-cut zig-zag substructure. The existing fire exit and green room are marked by walnut-lined portals — a moment of richness that sets them apart from the raw structure around them. Unsightly later additions are concealed; the new lining defers to the concrete rather than competing with it.
The wall was in place for Bold Tendencies' 2016 season, which included the first BBC Proms performance ever staged in a car park. The result is a permanent venue that holds its own against the building's rough character while meaningfully improving the conditions for performance.
