Somerville College held an invited competition for a new teaching building on the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter in Oxford. Our timber-framed, terracotta-clad design completes the Quarter's edge and is shaped around the health and wellbeing of the people who use it. It offers plentiful light, air, views and greenery, with terraces looking out over the Quarter's buildings, including the Blavatnik School of Government, which our directors worked on before founding the practice.

The building aspires to the college's four founding principles: Resilience, Inclusivity, Sustainability and Excellence. Our proposal for the RISE Building combines low embodied energy design with a dynamic form that is confident yet respectful of its surroundings, shaped by its context and its neighbours, and providing connected spaces for teaching, learning and community.
